Dominaria United (DMU), released on September 9, 2022, serves as a high-stakes return to Magic: The Gathering's foundational plane. The set kicks off a massive four-part story arc charting the modern Phyrexian invasion of Dominaria. Mechanically and visually, the 281-card main set heavily relies on multi-color synergies, nostalgia, and a "legends matter" theme.
Themes:
Domain: This returning mechanic modifies a spell's effectiveness based on the number of basic land types you control (Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, Forest). It acts as a massive payoff for drafting and building multi-color manabases.
Kicker: The classic mechanic returns with a twist: nearly all Kicker costs in the set are off-color.
Read Ahead: Featured on Saga enchantments, this new ability lets you choose the chapter your Saga enters on. You skip earlier chapter triggers to rush straight to the impact of the later ones, though you sacrifice the Saga sooner as a result.
Enlist: A new combat mechanic allowing an attacking creature to tap a non-attacking ally without summoning sickness, adding that ally's power to its own for the turn.
Stun Counters: Introduced as a formal evergreen mechanic, these freeze tapped permanents in place, requiring them to skip an untap step to remove a counter before they can become active again.
